Are we starting to see a new trend for Nike endorsed retirees? When Anfernee Hardaway announced his retirement Nike took advantage of the moment by re-releasing many of his old signature sneakers and creating an entirely new hybrid model which fuses together elements from many of those old sneakers. It now looks like Ken Griffey Jr is about to get the same treatment in light of his retirement. To go along with the retro releases Nike’s been dishing out from Griffey’s Swingman Series, they’ve created a Griffey hybrid known as the Nike Air Max JR.. Shown here in catalog scans provided by Deftronic, the Nike Air Max JR has a high-top cut similar to the Air Griffey Max 1 with a few familiar elements borrowed from the shoe, such as tongue and lace loops, the Swoosh along the toe and the 24 near the ankle (which sat on the ankle strap on the Max 1). New features include a layer of Nike’s innovative Torch material, a 360 Air unit and Nike+ compatibility. The two pairs shown above, one in black/varsity red and the other in a Neon Air Max 95-inspired colorway, are set to release in April and May 2011. A third pair shown in white/chlorine blue, which is shown after the jump, is scheduled to release sometime later on.
