For years consumers and movie enthusiasts have been urging Nike to release the Air Mag sneakers with the automatic lacing system that Marty McFly wore in the movie Back to the Future. There’s been petitions signed by thousands hoping their signature can make a difference on the shoes existence, websites dedicated entirely to the shoe, putting a call out to Nike to mass produce them, and videos created by people expressing their desire to own the sneakers.
Today Dime Magazine has confirmed that Tinker Hatfield and the boys at Nike’s Innovation Kitchen recently patented a design for an automatic lacing system similar to that used on the Marty’s Air Mag’s. According to the report, “the system includes a set of straps that can be automatically opened and closed to switch between a loosened and tightened position of the upper. The article further includes an automatic ankle cinching system that is configured to automatically adjust an ankle portion of the upper.” After all the pleading and begging, it seems many peoples wishes are beginning to come true as Nike works on changing the game and creating what’s sure to become the future in footwear.
Sketches of the automatic lacing system and it’s charging system are provided after the jump. As the system and shoes develop we’ll be sure to keep you posted on any updates.
