The Kid may not be knocking em outta the ballpark like he use to in the 90’s, but his signature Swingman Series with Nike still hits a home run in the hearts of sneakerheads.
After buttering us up with a few Air Griffey Max Retro’s in ’09, Nike’s brought back Ken Griffey Jr’s second signature sneaker from the series, the Air Griffey Max GD II. The first release touched down at retailers just a few weeks ago in a OG Black/Varsity Red color combo. Next in line is the White/Metallic Silver-Black version which is expected to launch next month in June. While this color palette is one from the shoes original days there’s a few things which have been altered. For starters, the color surrounding the perforated paneling on the quarter panel has been swapped around. Silver is now seen used as the primary color with black acting as trim. If you recall the OG’s from years past, those actually used verse coloring with black as the primary color and silver outlining it. The material surrounding the perforated quarter panel is also different, now using regular leather instead of the patent leather on the originals. To coincide with the simple, yet noticeable changes Nike also fastened silver to their Swooshes and to the top of the tongue, elements which were once black. I can live with the color swapping, it’s not a drastic change. But what is is the lack of the translucent outsole, a feature included on the OG’s that hasn’t been carried over to the 2010 retro. That right there breaks my heart. Still a hot release none the less, but the translucent outsole would of been killer.
Last time we showed you the Nike Air Griffey Max GD II in this colorway we announced their were some pre-orders available through legit eBay sellers. If you would rather not deal with eBay we would like to inform you that you can now place a pre-order for a pair through Eastbay. The site is listing a back-order ship date for June 15th, 2010 and you can best believe that as soon as Eastbay gets them in they’ll be on their way to you ASAP.
